Megawords Magazine, la tribune libre et alternative sort son 10e numéro/ Megawords Magazine #10, an alternative for free expression

Megawords magazine fait partie de la famille des magazines qui ne doivent leur succès qu’à leur talent. Pas de couvertures choisies au gré de la girouette ni de photos racoleuses, encore moins de sujets drivés par le lobby des annonceurs. Pour les sujets de toute façon, c’est vite réglé puisque le magazine est à 99% composé de photos. Et, en terme pictural, ils savent y faire nos amis Tony Smyrski et Dan Murphy, à l’origine du projet.

En 2005, les deux artistes veulent produire le mag “culture” qui manque en kiosque. Ensuite vint l’idée d’impliquer des inconnus et d’autres connus qui tâte de l’appareil photo. Le résultat, un magazine qui ressemble plus à un poème visuel fait de collages et d’associations intelligentes qu’à un pamphlet sur les dernières frasques de Kanye West .

Entièrement autofinancé, Megawords est un trimestriel avec un tirage plutôt confidentiel (3000 copies au grand max), distribué gratuitement quand on a la chance d’habiter Philly. Pour les autres, c’est via paypal que le plaisir arrive à sa porte.

Fin février, le 1oème numéro sortira donc des imprimantes canadiennes (et oui tout le monde imprime au pays du caribou aux US) et j’ai cru bon le signaler. Non seulement il fera 112 pages mais en plus on aura le droit à la retrospective de leur projet “Megawords Storefront”. Cette manifestation réalisée en septembre dernier dans leur QG de Philly qui pendant un mois a fait office de galerie, de tribune d’expression, de cinéclub en tout cas d’un haut lieu de culture pour tous les habitants de two.one.five.

Megawords Magazine is one of those magazines that owes its success only to its talent. No covers chosen according to the weather vane, no bitchy pictures, nor topics or reviews driven by the lobby of the advertising. Talking about topics, you won’t have the oportunity to read it because the magazine is 99% made of photographs. And in terms of photography, Tony Smyrski and Dan Murphy, founders of the magazine, know how to do it.

In 2005, both artists want to produce THE cultural magazine which misses in kiosks. Then came the idea to call for strangers and famous artists who are playing with the camera. The result, a magazine which looks like more as a visual poem made by collages and intelligent associations than a pamphlet on the last escapades of Kanye West.

Totally self-financed, Megawords is a quarterly with a rather confidential edition (3000 copies max), distributed freely only if you have the chance to live in Philly. For others like me, Paypal will knock on your door to bring you some visual pleasure every 4 months!

At the end of february, Megawords #10 will be out from canadian printers (yes, all the US magazines are printed up North) and I thought it was good to know. Not only, it’s gonna be a 112 pages magazine but you’ll have a recap of what was going on last september for “Megawords Storefront”.

This operation held in their Headquarter during 30 days acted as a gallery, a stand of expression, a film club or just the Mecca of underground culture for all the inhabitants of two.one.five.

According to the press release:

“The newest issue reflects upon the exhibition’s thirty-one days as a physical outlet for those looking to share ideas and themselves through various mediums. Color and black and white photographs document the controlled chaos that occurred within the four walls of the space. Reproductions of the storefront floor plan, grant proposal and schedules provide insight into exactly what it took to bring the exhibition to life. Other features include Megawords cofounder Anthony Smyrski’s answer to the question of “what” in a written piece about the storefront, while a personal letter from writer William Pym remembers the storefront as a place that  allowed human interaction to occur in actual space and time rather than from behind a computer screen. “
